Qualcomm engineers have achieved a groundbreaking feat by implementing the Stable Diffusion text-to-image AI model on a smartphone. Demonstrated on a Sony Xperia 5 II handset with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 8GB RAM, and 30GB+ storage, the innovation generated 512 x 512 pixel images in under 15 seconds, marking a significant leap for AI in smartphones.

Traditionally, such models relied on substantial cloud-based computing resources. However, this breakthrough brings generative AI capabilities to smartphones, offering cost-effectiveness and potential market revitalization, as emphasized by Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon.

Running AI models locally on smartphones proves cost-effective, as users have already covered the hardware costs upfront. Collaborations between Qualcomm, Google, MediaTek, and Meta aim to bring on-device generative AI implementations to reality, potentially leading to significant cost reductions.

Connolly also highlighted the democratization of AI on a global scale, benefitting over 6.5 billion smartphone users worldwide. This shift improves data efficiency and responsiveness, particularly in virtual assistants, chatbots, and predictive text input.

For AI companies, running models locally on devices could substantially reduce operational costs. Qualcomm's efforts to develop chips enabling AI processing on smartphones position them favorably in the AI hardware industry, aligning with the industry's shift towards edge computing.

The upcoming Qualcomm Summit in October promises new chips capable of running foundational generative AI models, providing a cost-effective alternative to cloud-based solutions.
