Exploring Human Memory through AI: Unraveling the Intricacies of Learning, Imagination, and Planning
Summary: In a groundbreaking study, researchers at UCL leverage generative AI to unveil the intricate workings of the human brain in processing memories for learning, imagination, and planning. Using a computational model mirroring the neural networks of the hippocampus and neocortex, the study delves into the simulation of memory encoding and retrieval.
The AI model showcases how the neocortex efficiently forms conceptual representations from experiences, enabling the recreation of past events and the generation of novel ones. This research sheds light on the brain's capacity to reconstruct memories with unique details, providing valuable insights into the role of memory in survival and prediction.
Key Facts:
- The AI model simulates the interaction between the hippocampus and neocortex in memory processing.
- The neocortex forms "conceptual" representations, facilitating the recreation of past experiences and the imagination of new scenarios.
- The study offers insights into memory's crucial role in survival, predicting future events, and understanding memory distortions.

Recent strides in generative AI are unraveling the mysteries of how memories empower us to learn, relive past experiences, and craft entirely new scenarios for imagination and planning. A study by UCL researchers, published in Nature Human Behaviour and funded by Wellcome, utilizes a generative neural network to simulate how neural networks in the brain learn and remember a series of events.
The model incorporates networks representing the hippocampus and neocortex to investigate their interaction during memory, imagination, and planning.
Lead author Eleanor Spens (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience) notes, "Recent advances in the generative networks used in AI show how information can be extracted from experience so that we can both recollect a specific experience and also flexibly imagine what new experiences might be like."
The AI networks demonstrate that replaying memories while resting helps the brain identify patterns from past experiences, aiding in predictions crucial for survival.
The model's training involved presenting 10,000 images of simple scenes, rapidly encoding each scene in the hippocampal network. Subsequently, the neocortical network learned to recreate scenes as patterns of activity, forming efficient conceptual representations that capture their meaning.
This study illuminates how the neocortex acquires conceptual knowledge, collaborating with the hippocampus to reconstruct events in the mind. It also explains the generation of new events during imagination and planning, shedding light on why existing memories often exhibit distortions.
Senior author Professor Neil Burgess (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience) emphasizes, "The way that memories are re-constructed, rather than being veridical records of the past, shows us how the meaning or gist of an experience is recombined with unique details, and how this can result in biases in how we remember things."
