WhatsApp Channels Now Has Four New Features

WhatsApp Channels became available to the public in the latter part of 2023, serving as a broadcasting tool for brands, celebrities, and public figures. Although not a groundbreaking concept, the introduction of Channels to one of the world's most popular messaging apps allowed millions to receive direct updates from their favorite individuals or organizations. Behind the scenes, WhatsApp developers have been diligently working on enhancing Channels with new functionalities, such as polls and voice messages. These features are now being widely rolled out to users globally.

According to a post from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Channels (via WABetaInfo), four new features are making their way to WhatsApp Channels. The first addition is the ability to send voice notes or audio messages. This feature has been in development since at least October of last year, as seen in version 2.23.23.2 of WhatsApp beta for Android.

Previously, channel administrators could send text messages and media to their followers, but the inclusion of voice notes provides a fresh way to interact with audiences. Our previous coverage of WhatsApp beta updates has given us insight into what some of these new features may look like.

The next addition is polls, allowing channel administrators to quickly assess the mood of their audience. Polls have long been a feature in WhatsApp group chats, and it's a logical extension for them to be included in Channels. Zuckerberg shared a poll that allows participants to select multiple options at once.

Additionally, Zuckerberg mentioned that channel owners can now appoint multiple administrators, a valuable feature for large corporations and brands needing constant communication with their customers. Lastly, he discussed how people can add channel posts to their Status, a feature we observed in a beta version released in December.

While no specific timeline is provided for the rollout of these additions, it's evident that they are officially out of the beta phase. The transition to WhatsApp's stable version on Android, iOS, WhatsApp Web, and desktop apps could take anywhere from days to weeks. Although most changes are centered around channel owners, the ability for subscribers to share channel posts through Status updates is a subscriber-focused addition. Overall, these new features aim to enhance engagement between brands and their customers using WhatsApp's one-way broadcasting tool.
